Mercury Open has started from 14 to 22 July.
We have three Japanese top pro in the tournament, Rika Hujiwara, Erica Sema, and Misaki Doi.

On 15th, I saw the match of Erica Sema, having strong power and will in her small body. Catching up from 1-5, she lost first set by 4-6, for Y.Chan is good player with stable fore and back hand stroke, good game making, and mental toughness. Unfortunately, after leaded 4-6, 6-4, 4-0, Erika lost the game with Chang by 4-6, 6-4, 5-7. I think her coach could/should commit the game more, but it was definitely great and tough game. Even though Erika burst into anger to herself when lost, I felt professionalism, seeing her cooled down running around the court(and maybe thinking about the game) for her next challenge.

On 19th, I saw the match of Misaki Doi(ranked 140) vs Christina McHale.(ranked 27) Both players are young generation just about 20 years. I could not imagine what feeling does Misaki have, matching stronger player who represent the United States at the upcoming Summer Olympics in the midst of American people. 95% of people never hoped to Misaki’s winning, but she was so brave and quiet fighter, thinking combination subjectively. Even though she lost the game by 6-4, 4-6, 4-6 and there surely is a difference between two players, she proved she is eligible to be very close to top 30 players. I fortunately have two chance to talk with her, before final set and after the match, I have no word to tell her, almost crying.

I believe/wish these two top women Japanese players will become greater player and come to San Diego again in next year.
